Congressional Gold Medal honoring the Monuments Men

Since the American Revolution, Congress has commissioned gold medals as its highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.

When Deputy Counsel Ralph H. Allen from the Little Rock District, Corps of Engineers was 13-years-old his grandfather, Ralph Hammett, took him on a tour through Europe explaining what the United States and Allies endured during World War II. What Allen didn’t know as a boy is that his grandfather was an Army Monuments Man charged with preserving the history, art and architecture of the war torn country during the world’s darkest hours.

In the past year following the release of a Hollywood blockbuster featuring the Army’s famed treasure savers, Allen has had the chance to look at history through his late grandfather’s storied life.

On Oct. 22 2015 recently Allen attended a ceremony in our nation’s capital because his granddad and comrades received a Congressional Gold Medal honoring the Monuments Men.

At the ceremony Allen had the opportunity to meet a few of the fine gentlemen his grandfather served with and their families.

Invitation Trail to MM Congressional Gold Medal

The Monuments Men Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony was on 22 October 2015 in Emancipation Hall of the new Capitol Visitor Center.  However, preparations started months before this event and much of it was done quietly and behind the scenes.  Robert Edsel, Christy Fox, Congresswoman Kay Granger, and the office staff of House Speaker John Boehner were known to be heavily involved, but a large ceremony like this took a great deal of planning.  Here is some of the known dates and paperwork:

31 August 2015 –  CONFIDENTIAL Early Notice of congressional Gold Medal Ceremony

30 September 2015 – First Internet Invitations sent out

14 October 2015 –  Later Internet Invitations sent out

20 October 2015 – Internet Invitation to the post-ceremony Reception sent out

22 October 2015 – 1345 hours – at Will call table – Formal Invitation and Ticket to Admit Bearer

22 October 2015 -1400 hours –  Enter Emancipation Hall, receive Program, and are Seated

22 October 2015 -1500 hours – Ceremony begins

Special Thanks to Michelle Willens, who set up the visit to the National Gallery Archives in Washington, D.C. on 22 and 23 October 2015.  We started going through the James Rorimer archives and found many pages and photographs related to Captain Ralph W. Hammett.  She helped with suggestions of other MM records to check, but I could not even finish a fraction of the Rorimer records.  (I will return, or maybe other Hammett Relatives will follow up.)

Two Highlights:  1.  Soon after leaving Omaha Beach, 2Lt Rorimer meets Capt Hammett at 1330 hours on 4 August 1944 at VALOGNES, Englise St. Malo. (Confidential Army Report)

2.  2Lt Rorimer took a photograph of Capt Hammett and some identified Frenchmen as they retrieve a large Goya painting. (Paris 1944)

Monuments Men: 26 October 2015 – Main Editorial

It was an unexpected editorial on 26 October 2015 in the state-wide newspaper, Arkansas Democrat Gazette, written by Editorial Page Editor David Barham.  He was contacted that same day and he was not aware that there were any relatives of any of the Monument Men in Arkansas, but he had read last Wednesday in a short clip from the news services that the Monuments Men Foundation was closing at the end of October 2015.  He had read the book and seen the Movie and wanted to publicly thank the author, Robert Edsel, and Foundation for accomplishing what they did:  the past preservation of cultural treasures and the future need to continue this type of preservation and to halt the destruction.

Credit is also given to Jan Allen who found the article on Monday morning and stopped Ralph from shaving before 6:00 a.m.  He had to read the article (twice) before he could go back to his morning routine.

(opening paragraphs)

SOMEBODY put a copy of the Monuments Men by Robert Edsel in our hands a few years back.  It was already in paperback and rumor had it that a movie based on teh book would come out soon – Bill Murray! George Clooney! – so we gave it a couple of evenings.

Call it suggested reading.  For a non-fiction book, it read like a fast-moving spy novel.
